I often share stories of older people who are benefiting from their Seating Matters chair. Today I want to tell you about 13 year old Logan ‘Bear’ Matthews and his Mum Alison, from Luton, UK.
Bear suffers from complex epilepsy, a condition that affects his brain. Epilepsy can start at any age and there are many different types. Electrical activity is happening in our brain all the time as the cells in the brain send messages to each other. A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of intense electrical activity in the brain. This causes a temporary disruption to the way the brain normally works. The result is an epileptic seizure.
Not only does Bear suffer from epilepsy, he is in pain throughout the day because of scoliosis and chronic lung disease. Before Bear got his Kidz Phoenix, he sat in unsafe chairs that offered no support and would increase his risk of falling from the chair. Bear’s mum Alison faced the issue that I hear all too often when someone is sat in the wrong chair.

“He cannot position himself and we had to redo his seating position many times during the day in his old chair.”
Doctors told Bear’s family that he wasn’t going to live beyond 10 years old and now at 13, he is much happier and safer in his Seating Matters Kidz Phoenix, a specialist chair for children. I do believe that his chair has helped prolong his life and for that I am truly overjoyed.
Alison shared her delight as Bear’s new chair brings him so much comfort.
“He talks with his eyes and smiles. He lost his voice a few years ago. His smile tells me his is happy and comfortable. He just relaxes in his chair, it’s his safe place and he is happy to spend his day in it. I’ve been so happy with the
chair.”
If you have loved one or a patient who is sitting in a Kidz Seating Matters chair, you may be wondering if the chair will grow as the child or teenager grows. The answer to this is yes, this is possible. If you feel the chair is being outgrown, our Seating Specialist can reassess your loved one or patient for a possible ‘Growth Pack’. This would include the renewal of the back and cushion of the chair, without having to purchase a new chair.
