Prevention is Better Than Cure

As clinicians, we know that too many patients  are suffering a reduced quality of life from avoidable pressure injuries and far too much money is being spent by health services worldwide on reacting to these problems aft it is too late. We are often asked about pressure management in seating and specifically in relation to our cushions.

The Four Principles of Clinical Therapeutic Seating

In seating we should look at the cushion or “appropriate surface” in the context of the whole chair and seating experience – not in isolation or for helping prevent pressure injuries.

  1. Load the Body.
  2. Provide Postural Support.
  3. Allow Effective Repositioning.
  4. Use an Appropriate Surface.

Which Patients Are At Risk Of Pressure Injuries?

Patients with low or no mobility due to their age, an accident or illness, who sit for long periods of the day.

Patients who cannot reposition themselves independently when they get uncomfortable. These patients might slump to one side, forward or slide down the chair, needing help from carers or family members to regain a mid-line posture.

Patients who have thin or fragile skin and who are a high pressure injury risk.

Patients who are hoisted for all transfers.

Our Advice

For every chair user, we recommend a personalised Seating Assessment bearing in mind the Four Principles of Seating to determine the best chair and the most appropriate cushion.

Our seating experts have supported thousands of clinicans in recommending the best chairs for postural support. They have also helped reduce the risk of pressure injuries and improved the seating experience of thousands of chair users.
